Paonia & The North Fork Valley

A hand painted welcome sign with fruit and mountains that says "Paonia, Welcome! Next Left".

The North Fork Valley in the Western Slope of Colorado was inhabited by the Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) people until 1880 when they were forced out. The valley consists of several small towns in a rural setting including Paonia, Hotchkiss, Crawford, and Somerset, for a combined population of about 3,000.

Paonia sits at the base of Lamborn Mountain on the western edge of the West Elk Mountains. Elsewhere lives in the center of this quaint town which is surrounded by orchards, farms, and vineyards.

Paonia has attracted artists, sustainable farmers and community-minded folks for decades. When you come into town and see the short strip of main street (Grand Ave.), it can be hard to believe that this little town supports such a vibrant community. However, if you stick around you’ll learn the many ways that life is incredibly rich here.
