THE SPACE

The role of a residency is to create a spaciousness that allows for the open flow of ideas, for experimentation, and reflection on an individual’s unique artistic process. While it is going to be different for everyone, for me it was a chance to hone my work ethic and focus my energies.
— Erika Lundahl, 2018 Resident

Studio Design & Information

Elsewhere is housed in a rustic, 100-year-old building that has been lovingly built out by artists over the years. It is full of charm and all the quirks that come with it. All rooms and spaces in the main house have radiant in-floor heat, and there is a large wood stove on the main floor as a supplemental heat system. The main floor kitchen is shared by Suite, Loft, and Gingerbread House residents (the Basement has its own kitchen). Residents are responsible for providing their own meals at Elsewhere. There is a washer and dryer that residents are free to use. We have high-speed fiber internet and wifi. There are several bicycles available for residents to get around Paonia (nothing performance-oriented, it’s an eclectic collection of town bikes).

ADA Accessibility:  The living spaces at the main Elsewhere site are not wheelchair accessible. Elsewhere is working hard to improve its accessibility but is not currently ADA compliant. Accommodations will be made for artists with visual or hearing impairments or any other needs. Please email info@elsewherestudios.org with any inquiries.

We are across the alley from a local bar, Waldo’s, which can be noisy at night sometimes.

Residents in the Loft Room and Gingerbread House share the Main Floor Studio. The Suite (top floor) and the Basement have their own private studio space.

The Main Floor Studio

This studio is approximately 360 sq ft with high ceilings. This studio is shared by residents in the Loft and Gingerbread House. There is track lighting, easels, a lofted library, slop sink, multiple desk spaces, screen printing equipment and more! We host our artist presentations and final shows in the Main Studio. Please let us know if there is something specific you require in terms of space or materials, we will let you know whether we can offer it, or can point you in the direction of community resources.

The Commons

The Common area shared by all residents features the main floor kitchen, bathroom, laundry/utility room, dining table, seating area, and front hall entrance. This is the heart of the building and a good place for resident socializing and snuggling with Tomatoes.

The Living Spaces

The Loft

The Loft is a small private room (about 9x10 ft with a 5x9 ft sleeping loft with a queen mattress). The Loft resident uses the main floor studio space (approximately 330 sq ft), and shared kitchen, bath, common area and outside yard. This cozy room is right off the common area and main studio.

Gingerbread House

The Gingerbread House is a small cabin in the backyard. It’s heated by a wood stove in the winter and shaded by large trees in the summer. It shares the kitchen and bath in the main house and shares the main floor studio space. It is approximately 9x11 ft with a 5x9 sleeping loft.

The GBH is a rustic and charming space. Access to the lofted bed is by a vertical ladder (pictured). The wood stove is the main heat source for the cabin and the resident is responsible for tending it (we have wood and tools stocked), there is also an electric space heater. The building heats up quickly because it’s small, it’s easy to make cozy even during the coldest months.

The Suite

The Suite is on the top floor of Elsewhere. There are two smaller rooms approximately 9x9 ft each, and a large room about 17x18 ft. It has its own private studio/living room space, a full bathroom with separate shower & tub, and shares the main kitchen downstairs.

Basement Apartment & Studio

The bottom floor of Elsewhere is our most independent space. It has its own kitchen, bathroom, sauna (!) with shower, bedroom, and living/studio space. This is a basement space but the floors are thick, some quiet muffled noise from upstairs can be heard.

Ceramics Studio

We have partnered with the Paonia Clayworks Studio located down the road from Elsewhere. There is 24/7 access to the space and it includes five wheels, a slab roller, clay mixer, extruder, three electric kilns & raku kiln. Clayworks fires at cone 6 oxidation, with hopes of installing gas kilns in the future. Clayworks charges their own fees for using the studio, if you’d like to use the Clayworks Studio please let Elsewhere know in advance.

Printing at Elsewhere

Regular "office" prints can be made at Elsewhere Studios on our Xerox Phaser 8560 (a color wax printer) or at the Paonia Public Library down the street. If you print a lot at Elsewhere please donate to the supply fund. The library has an Epson Artisan 1430 Printer (with their own fees) and an Epson Perfection V600 Photoscanner as well as various cameras and gear for checkout.

Paonia also has High Country Printing, a professional shop with affordable prices who can make large format prints and promotional materials.

Tomatoes the Cat

Tomatoes is the Elsewhere cat and mascot. He loves to cuddle and hang out in your studio. Please let us know if you have cat allergies and we will try our best to accommodate, but know that Elsewhere will never be 100% free of cat hair as Tomatoes has lived onsite for thirteen years. He is very pushy but feel free to keep him out of your private space, he will be fine (though he may cry about it).

We have a quirky + unique space at Elsewhere. If you have any questions about the spaces or accommodation needs please contact info@elsewherestudios.org
