The Residency:

We host artists from around the world and provide them with the opportunity to focus on their work in a unique and supportive environment. Elsewhere is an eclectic, imaginative space that values exploration and experimentation. Residents have lots of freedom to structure their time how they wish, connecting with the community, exploring the outdoors, working on their own, etc. Artists stay for one-month durations, with the option to be in residence for consecutive months up to three months. Elsewhere generally hosts four to six artists at one time.

Since its inception in 2011, the Elsewhere Studios Residency Program has hosted over over 300 artists from over 21 countries. Elsewhere is open to visual artists, writers, musicians, and performing artists as well as scientists, activists, teachers, students, or any kind of creative worker interested in exploring and expanding their work. Artists are supported in the creation of new work and new ideas through dedicated time, a space conducive to focused work, and an environment that is both stimulating and nurturing.

Residents share their work and processes with the community through Final Fridays and additional public events. Open Studios end each month at Elsewhere, with Paonia’s Final Friday art walk happening across town. Residents often host additional events, teaching classes or workshops in the community or other interactive projects.

Elsewhere is focused on creating opportunities for underrepresented artists through our Parent Residency, Indigenous Poet Residency, Aging Creatively, and by offering scholarships for BIPOC and LGBTQIA2S+ creatives. Elsewhere is committed to social and environmental justice through its everyday practices and specific projects such as INSPIRED: Art at Work and Art, Environment and Sustainability.

Our fees + funding:

Elsewhere Studios is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and we strive to make this experience accessible to all artists. Therefore, we have set subsidized residency fees between $650 and $900 (depending on the space selected).

It costs the organization $2000 to host one resident for month. We raise the remaining funds through grants, donations, and fundraising events which requires lots of labor from our staff, board, and awesome volunteers. Residents with stable finances are encouraged to make tax-deductible donations to Elsewhere as it allows us to make our programs more accessible and extend financial support to artists who need it most.

We offer partial (25% - 75%) scholarships in the regular Residency for underrepresented, BIPOC, formerly incarcerated, LGBTQIA2S+, and/or creatives with disabilities, with many thanks to the Addy Foundation.

We host fully-funded residency opportunities through special calls for the Parent Residency and Indigenous Poet Residency.

Elsewhere was such an amazing and vital part of my art making and mental health and I am so proud to have spent time with such a wonderful group of people.
