Pricing & Our Way With Money

To speak of money is an exercise in humility — and, we believe, a creative act.

Like all energy, money moves. It can contract or expand, hoard or flow, diminish life or serve it. In a culture that too often treats money as an end in itself — where wealth equates with power, shrewdness is valued over relationship, and those with less are made to feel like less — we try to meet it differently. At Elsewhere, money is not the point. It is the current that keeps the portal open.

At its most essential, money is simply a way of connecting human gifts with human needs. That is what it was always meant to be. We think of a residency fee as an energy exchange: a contribution to a living system that includes you, the artists who came before you, the artists who will come after, the building itself, and the community that surrounds it. What you offer enters the current. It circles around and comes back.

We use a sliding scale because we believe the exchange is more honest — and more creative — when it reflects your actual reality. The sliding scale is an invitation to participate consciously. To ask: what do I genuinely have to offer right now? And to give from that place.

RESIDENCY FEES

We are a small nonprofit with a very modest budget — a building, a mission, and an insatiable belief that when artists are given time, space, and community, something essential is unlocked in the world.

What it actually costs to host one resident for one month is approximately $2,500. Our residency fees cover a meaningful portion of that. Grants, individual donors, and community supporters bridge the rest. When you pay toward the higher end of our sliding scale, you are sending energy forward — holding this place open for someone who could not otherwise afford to be here.

All fees are monthly and include your private living space, access to the shared studio and common areas, high-speed internet, use of community bicycles, and full participation in Elsewhere's programs and community life. Artists are featured with a final exhibition at the end of each month, corresponding with our town wide Final Friday Art Walks.

The Sweet Suite $1,100 – $1,600 per month

The Loft Room $950 – $1,300 per month

The Gingerbread House $950 – $1,300 per month

DEPOSITS & CANCELLATIONS

To confirm your residency, a deposit of 50% of your total fee is due upon acceptance. The remaining balance is due one week before arrival.

Cancellations 8 or more weeks before your start date: deposit refunded in full. Cancellations 4–8 weeks before your start date: 50% of your deposit refunded. Cancellations under 4 weeks before your start date: deposit is non-refundable.

If you need to cancel, we will always do our best to work with you on rescheduling, subject to availability.

Sliding Scale ~ Where do you land?

The questions below are an invitation — not a formula. Sit with them honestly. Only you know your full financial picture.

Elsewhere was such an amazing and vital part of my art making and mental health and I am so proud to have spent time with such a wonderful group of people.

Scholarships & financial support

We are actively rebuilding our scholarship and fellowship offerings as we relaunch, and we are seeking partners and supporters to help make fully and partially funded residencies possible again.

We have in the past offered partial scholarships (25%–75%) for BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, formerly incarcerated, and creatives with disabilities, and fully funded opportunities through the Parent Residency and Indigenous Poet Residency. We are working to restore and expand these.
